Don'ts to Remember When Assisting Blind Persons

  • Don't shout to a blind person as if he were deaf.

  • Don't assume a blind person needs assistance. Ask him.

  • Don't grab a blind person and start pulling him somewhere.

  • Don't avoid using words like "look" and "see".

  • Don't move a blind person's possessions without letting him know.

  • Don't play "guess who" with a blind person.

  • Don't use phrases such as "over there" when giving directions.

  • Don't needlessly rush a blind person.

  • Don't leave a blind person standing alone in an open space.

  • Don't leave doors ajar around a blind person.

  • Don't offend a blind person by addressing him through a third party.

  • Don't exclaim "wonderful" or "marvelous" simply because a blind person can do some ordinary task, such as telling time on his watch.

  • Don't let a blind person's hand dangle in the air if it is obviously his intention to shake hands.

  • Don't refill a blind person's coffee cup without telling him.

  • Don't leave the room without telling a blind person, so he won't be trying to converse with you after you've gone.

  • Don't express pity or patronizing attitudes towards a blind person.

  • Don't take advantage of a blind associate by communicating around him through gestures and signs to a third person. It is in poor taste and an encroachment of his personality.

  • DO use common sense and be sensitive to the needs of blind persons.
